Decision, Decision, Decision! BoC Delivers a Rate Hike!

The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.50% on October 28, marking its first hike since July 2023 as policymakers responded to growing inflation risks.

The decision followed Canada’s September CPI report, which showed annual inflation rising to 3.1% from 3.0% in August, while the central bank raised its 2027 inflation forecast to 3%, up from 2% in July.

Energy Costs and Trade Risks Drive the Bank of Canada Rate Hike

September’s inflation report highlighted the growing pressure from energy prices. Gasoline prices jumped 27.8% year over year, while inflation excluding gasoline stood at just 2.2%. Core inflation measures remained near the Bank’s 2% target.

However, persistently high oil prices have increased transportation and production costs, raising concerns that businesses may pass these expenses on to consumers.

Meanwhile, new U.S. tariffs have added uncertainty to Canada’s growth outlook.

The Bank of Canada rate hike reflects concerns that these pressures may become more persistent, with headline inflation projected to reach approximately 3.5% by the end of 2026.

The Economic Trade-Off Behind Higher Interest Rates

Higher borrowing costs may put additional pressure on variable-rate mortgages, household spending and business investment.

However, Canada’s economy has shown greater resilience than previously expected. The Bank now forecasts 1.0% GDP growth in 2026 and 2.0% in both 2027 and 2028.

The decision reflects a difficult balance between preventing persistent inflation and avoiding unnecessary pressure on economic growth.

Bank of Canada December Rate Decision: Another Hike or a Pause?

The Bank indicated that further interest rate increases may be necessary, but emphasized that policymakers will proceed cautiously.

Ahead of the October decision, a Reuters survey found that 19 of 34 economists expected a 25-basis-point hike, with a majority forecasting another increase by March 2027.

The next Bank of Canada interest rate decision is scheduled for December 9, 2026.

Markets will now watch upcoming inflation, employment and GDP data to assess whether another increase is needed.
